7th - 16th September,
2012
We will explore the
challenges of climate change facing Europe, and the range of personal
responses that citizens can make. Participants will critically
consider the complexities and uncertainties of climate change – its
causes, effects and impacts. Lifestyle themes will
include food, energy control, travel and transport, leisure and
entertainment, shopping, money and jobs, connecting with others, and
taking action. Building themes will include sustainable design,
materials and renewable technologies.
Participants will be
informed, enabled and empowered to form their own views, take action
and implement their own initiatives. The workshop will be fully
participative, with discussions, talk and walks, case-studies,
visits, interactive games, videos, learning notes and references. The
Learner Workshop will be partly based on the tutor's Guidebook on
Climate Change and Lifestyles (UNESCO/UNEP), as well as visits eg. to
the local Green Build Show (http://www.northnorfolk.org/greenbuild).
Participants will:
- Understand the causes, effects and impacts of climate change.
- Have the critical skills to make personal choices that address the challenges of climate change.
- Experience a range of lifestyle approaches, building and technological designs.
- Develop their own plans for personal action.
Accommodation is in a
small residential activity centre (www.horsteadcentre.org.uk) of 45
beds, based in a former Georgian rectory and run on behalf of the
Church of England (Diocese of Norwich). It is in the Norfolk Boards
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We will have sole use of the
centre. It has a range of on-site activities, including a purpose
built climbing tower with a zip wire, a low ropes course with tunnels
and a Jacob’s Ladder high wire activity, as well as canoeing on the
adjacent River Bure and a variety of team building games in an
enclosed garden. It also has a bonfire area for summer evenings, a
barbecue and two lounge areas for meetings. The games room contains a
pool table and table tennis table, as well as table football and some
giant games (i.e. giant Connect4, giant Jenga). The village has lots
of riverside and woodland walks, as well as shops and public houses.
